In response to this article, Nuhanciam, a leading brand in cosmetics for medium to dark skin tones, reaffirmed its commitment to formulas that comply with regulations and respect its customers.
Muriel Berradia, co-founder, and Jocelyn Bariteau, co-founder and formulator, respond:
"Since the launch of our brand, our formulas have been custom-made, manufactured in France, and include patented active ingredients, such as Alpha Melight. It goes without saying that we are very selective when choosing our ingredients, in compliance with regulations, and in some areas, we go beyond industry recommendations. Our goal is to stay one step ahead so that our customers can use our skincare products safely.
It is true that there are skincare products with formulations that are harmful to Black skin, particularly those designed to lighten the skin or certain hair care products. However, the American study emphasizes that these are products whose origin or ingredients cannot be guaranteed. This is not the case with French brands, which are manufactured in France and comply with the strict specifications of cosmetics regulations.

It is important to emphasize that generalizations can be harmful not only to the industry but also to the players in this market, which many consider a niche. Cosmetics for Black and mixed-race skin represent a market of millions of female consumers who have the right to safe, effective, and affordable skincare products. More and more French brands, including Nuhanciam, have taken on the challenge of meeting these requirements, while adding innovation and sensory appeal."
The Nuhanciam brand has been around since 2010. Specializing in medium- to dark-skinned women, its expertise has made it a leading brand in France. In fact, its flagship product—which addresses one of the top concerns for Black women, namely hyperpigmentation—is a best-seller. Sold in pharmacies and drugstores and recommended by dermatologists, the brand is experiencing strong international growth.
