So, what's the best skincare routine for oily and/or acne-prone dark skin? Here are our tips.

Why does black skin tend to be oily and prone to breakouts?

We often hear that black skin is "naturally oily"... But it's a little more complicated than that.

In reality, there are no official statistics to support the claim that most black skin is oily. What we do know, however, is that darker skin generally produces more sebum than Caucasian skin. It is therefore more prone to breakouts and is also more likely to appear oily.

However, this does not mean that all black skin is oily or prone to acne. We are talking here about a general trend, which can be explained in part by biological characteristics specific to skin rich in melanin:

  • High sebum production: Because the sebaceous glands in black skin are particularly active, they tend to produce excess sebum.
  • A slightly more acidic pH: Studies have shown that the pH of Black skin is, on average, slightly lower (around 4.5 to 4.7) than that of Caucasian skin (which tends to range between 5 and 5.5). This can promote bacterial overgrowth or an imbalance in the skin’s microbiome, leading to more frequent breakouts.
  • An adaptation to the climate: Historically, dark skin evolved in hot, humid climates. According to some researchers, the skin adapted by naturally producing more sebum to better withstand the heat and limit water loss. And in a drier, colder climate like that of Europe, black skin dehydrates quickly. This is because the air there is less humid, which promotes the evaporation of water from the epidermis. To maintain proper hydration, the sebaceous glands go into overdrive and tend to overproduce sebum. It is this excessive sebum production that can give dark skin an oily appearance on the surface—even though it remains dehydrated deep down—and can also lead to the appearance of skin imperfections: clogged pores, blackheads, pimples…

In any case, having oily or acne-prone dark skin isn't a universal rule! Many other factors can influence skin type:

  • Genetic heritage.
  • Age (skin often becomes drier over time).
  • The environment (pollution, sunlight, temperature changes, etc.).
  • Hormones.
  • The skincare products used (some products can dry out or weaken the skin barrier and cause excess sebum production).
  • Lifestyle (stress, diet, etc.).

The Ideal Skincare Routine for Oily or Acne-Prone Black Skin, Step by Step

1. Gently cleanse (morning and night) 🧼

To remove impurities and excess oil, start your morning and evening skincare routine by cleansing your skin. Use a gentle, soap-free, unscented cleansing gel specially formulated to purify your oily, dark skin without drying it out or irritating it.

💡 Recommended product: the Dermo-Purifying Gel Cleanser , which cleanses effectively and gently while helping to regulate sebum production.

2. Exfoliate and cleanse (1–2 times a week) 🔄

Oily dark skin needs to be exfoliated once or twice a week. By unclogging pores, removing dead skin cells, and promoting cell renewal, exfoliation will not only help tighten pores and mattify the complexion, but also prevent the appearance of breakouts and hyperpigmentation spots. Since Black skin is particularly delicate, avoid overly abrasive scrubs and opt instead for:

  • A Gentle Scrub exfoliating beads (avoid if you have pimples).
  • An enzymatic exfoliant or one containing AHAs/BHAs.
  • A purifying mask.

💡 Recommended products: the Gentle Scrub and/or the Purifying Radiance Mask.

3. Treat blemishes and dark spots at the same time (morning and night) 🎯

A skincare routine for oily or acne-prone dark skin should ideally include a serum or concentrated treatment that works deep within the skin to regulate sebum, tighten pores, and combat breakouts. In addition, Black skin is particularly prone to developing dark marks after a breakout. That’s why it’s also highly recommended to apply an anti-dark spot serum daily to prevent and correct these post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation spots.

💡 Recommended products: the Anti-Imperfection Serum for its intensive action against pimples, blackheads, and excess sebum production, and the Brightening Anti-Dark Spot Serum , which helps minimize acne scars by accelerating the skin’s natural exfoliation process and reducing excess melanin production.

4. Moisturize (morning and night) 💧

Oily dark skin requires plenty of moisture to prevent excessive sebum production in response to dehydration. Avoid overly rich creams and occlusive mineral or plant-based oils, such as coconut oil or flaxseed oil, and opt instead for lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizers.

💡 Recommended products:the Anti-Blemish Emulsion, which deeply hydrates the skin while treating blemishes and/or the Matifying and Unifying Fluid , which hydrates while helping to regulate sebum and melanin production at the same time.

5. Protect from the sun ☀️ (every morning)

Contrary to popular belief, applying sunscreen is an essential step in a skincare routine for oily black skin. Exposure to the sun’s UV rays stimulates sebum production, which can exacerbate skin shine, breakouts, and even hyperpigmentation. It’s best to choose a sunscreen with a high SPF (at least 50) that’s formulated for oily black skin—one that doesn’t leave white streaks or a greasy residue.

💡 Recommended products: the Invisible Cream , which offers very high protection without a white cast, or the Tinted Cream SPF 50+ to protect and even out skin tone in a single step with a matte, dry finish.

In summary: The best skincare routine for dark, oily, and/or acne-prone skin 🤎

A good skincare routine for oily, acne-prone black skin consists of at least 5 essential steps:

  1. Cleansing with a gentle purifying gel.
  2. Exfoliation (1 to 2 times a week) using a Gentle Scrub, a purifying mask, or an enzymatic or AHA/BHA exfoliant.
  3. Targeted treatment of blemishes and dark spots with a serum and/or a concentrated treatment.
  4. Moisturize with a lightweight, non-comedogenic product.
  5. Sunscreen with a high SPF suitable for dark skin.
