Dark Spots - Even Skin Tone: How to Avoid the Rebound Effect?
When we talk about brown spots—pigment spots that set in and won't go away—we very often overlook the psychological impact they can have.
Having pigment spots on your face or elsewhere on your body can be difficult to deal with. It’s tempting to turn to “quick-fix” solutions—treatments that make the spots disappear or fade in record time. But beware of the rebound effect. We’ll explain what it is and how to avoid it.
What is the rebound effect?
If you have or have ever had dark spots, you know that when you start a treatment, you want only one thing: for it to work—and quickly. However, there’s a downside to action that’s too rapid—it can be harsh on the skin. The return—and worse—of dark spots and breakouts. Your skin will feel under attack, and to defend itself, the top layer of your epidermis will, at first, thicken, and then your pores will tighten. They’ll eventually become clogged. This is true for acne caused by sun exposure but not for dark spots. The result of this phenomenon is the proliferation of bacteria and sebum that cannot be expelled. This is how your skin can develop blackheads, comedones, and microcysts—and consequently, new dark spots.

5 Ways to Avoid the Yo-Yo Effect:
1 - Be patient: Pigment spots appear because your skin has sustained damage (this is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation). It therefore takes time for your skin to heal, repair itself, and fade the scar.
2 - Don't believe promises that seem too good to be true: No product will make your dark spots disappear in two days. Always be wary of overly retouched photos on social media or "miracle" videos. It's important to verify the accuracy of the information before starting a new skincare routine.
3 - Read online reviews and comments on the brand's social media pages: this will give you an idea of what customers think of the brand and its products.
4 - Check the ingredients and where the product is manufactured: if you spot any skin-lightening ingredients (such as hydroquinone, which is normally banned under European cosmetics regulations), you know the rebound effect isn't far off.
5 - Avoid overly extreme solutions: It's important to use skincare products that are safe and whose origin you know.
The most important thing for our skin: getting results is essential, but not at any cost. Let's listen to our skin and give it time.
