Why Spots Appear on the Body: The Causes

In most cases, dark spots on the body appear as a result of a condition called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Simply put: when the skin is damaged or irritated, it reacts by producing more melanin (the natural pigment that gives it its color), which can lead to the formation of a dark spot.

More specifically, here are the five main causes of body spots:

  1. Repeated friction.
  2. Pimples and blemishes (acne on the back or décolletage, ingrown hairs, small cysts, etc.).
  3. Insect bites or skin rashes.
  4. Irritating or unsuitable products (harsh soaps, overly abrasive scrubs, alcohol-based deodorants, etc.).
  5. Sun exposure.

It’s worth noting that on black and dark-skinned individuals, body spots are all the more common because their skin is naturally richer in melanin: this is both its strength and, in a way, its weakness. Indeed, at the slightest sign of damage or irritation, dark skin reacts quickly and strongly by overproducing melanin in specific areas.

 

4 Effective Tips for Getting Rid of Body Stains

1. Avoid certain types of clothing

We don’t always think about it, but certain types of clothing can contribute to the development of dark spots on the body. In fact, synthetic fabrics (polyester, nylon, spandex, etc.) and overly tight-fitting garments not only cause repeated friction but also trap heat and moisture. Over time, this can lead to irritation, causing the skin to react by producing more melanin. To prevent this, opt for soft, natural, and breathable fabrics (cotton, linen, bamboo, silk, etc.) and wear loose-fitting clothing, especially at night or when you’re sweating.

2. Don't spray perfume directly on your skin (especially in the summer)

Many perfumes contain photosensitizing ingredients such as certain essential oils (bergamot, lemon, and citrus fruits, etc.), plants, or vegetable oils. These ingredients increase the skin’s sensitivity to the sun and, as a result, the risk of sunburn… and dark spots. It’s therefore best not to apply perfume directly to your skin—especially your neck, shoulders, décolletage, and wrists, which are generally among the areas of the body most exposed to UV rays. Instead, spray it on your clothes or hair (but use it sparingly, as it can dry them out), at least before going out in the sun.

3. Never scratch or pick at irritated skin

Yes, it’s tempting and it feels good. But scratching or picking at a mosquito bite, a pimple, or a scab will only make the inflammation worse. And, as a result, your skin will tend to produce excess melanin. The result: a stubborn brown spot may form where you’ve been picking at it. So keep your fingernails away from it and instead apply a soothing or healing treatment to the affected area to reduce inflammation. 4. Always treat your skin gently
