SALICYLIC ACID

Uneven skin texture, clogged pores, small pimples...?Salicylic acid —or SALICYLIC ACID, as it’s listed in the INCI—is one of your best allies! Ideal for unclogging pores, removing dead skin cells, and preventing breakouts, it has been used for years in dermatology and cosmetics. Thanks to these benefits, salicylic acid is a key ingredient in many skincare products, especially those formulated for oily, combination, and acne-prone skin. Let’s take a closer look at this active ingredient that has become a must-have.

What Is Salicylic Acid? — Definition

Salicylic acid is an active ingredient in the beta-hydroxy acid (or BHA) family, naturally found in white willow bark and certain plants such as wintergreen and meadowsweet.

Today, it is produced synthetically in laboratories to ensure maximum purity and effectiveness in cosmetic formulations.

Salicylic acid is recognized as a key ingredient for purifying the skin and restoring its clear, even appearance. It is particularly valued fortreating blemish-prone skin, but its benefits extend far beyond that.

Salicylic Acid — How It Works

Salicylic acid is a fat-soluble chemical exfoliant, which means it can penetrate the skin’s lipid layer and act on clogged pores. Unlike other exfoliating acids (AHAs), which tend to act on the skin’s surface, salicylic acid works deeper, right at the source of blackheads and pimples.

By penetrating the pores, salicylic acid helpsremove accumulatedimpurities and dead skin cells. This exfoliation process unclogs the pores, thereby reducing the formation of comedones (the infamous blackheads) and blemishes.

But its benefits don’t stop there. Salicylic acid also has a keratolytic effect, meaning it helps refine the skin’s outermost layer (the stratum corneum) by promoting cell turnover. The result: a smoother skin texture, a more even complexion, and visibly clearer skin.

Finally, it has anti-inflammatory properties. It soothes irritation caused by breakouts and reduces discomfort, making it an ingredient particularly well-suited for skin prone to blemishes.

Is salicylic acid suitable for all skin types?

Salicylic acid is particularly recommended for combination and oily skin prone to blemishes ( pimples, enlarged pores, blackheads, etc.).

It may also be suitable for dull skin that needs a little boost. Those with sensitive or very dry skin, however, should use it with caution and opt for gentle formulas with low concentrations (0.5 to 1%).

The good news: it’s suitable for all skin tones and works equally well for both young and mature skin, provided you follow the proper usage guidelines.

Salicylic Acid in Cosmetics

Salicylic acid is found in all kinds of cosmetic products primarily intended for combination, oily, and blemish-prone skin: purifying lotions, anti-blemish serums, cleansing gels, and certain exfoliating treatments. It is also present in products for the back or chest when treating body blemishes.

Contraindications and side effects: It is not recommended to use high concentrations of salicylic acid during pregnancy, unless advised by a doctor. If used too often or in too high a dose, it can cause irritation, redness, or a tight feeling on the skin, particularly in those with sensitive skin. Additionally, it is photosensitizing: applying sunscreen is therefore essential during the day.

Usage and Application Tips: Avoid using it at the same time as other potent active ingredients such as retinoids. And above all, be sure to moisturize your skin well and protect it from the sun the next day.

At NUHANCIAM, we’ve chosen to incorporate salicylic acid into certain products in our anti-blemish line, specifically for its targeted effectiveness against blemishes.
