What Is Rainbow Algae? — Definition

Known by its scientific name Cystoseira tamariscifolia, the rainbow algae is a brown algae belonging to the family Sargassaceae and the genus Cystoseira. It grows along the coasts of the English Channel and the Atlantic Ocean, particularly in France, Spain, and Portugal.

It owes its pretty name to its spiny branches, which, when submerged in water, are highly iridescent: their color ranges from green to blue to purple. This iridescence allows rainbow algae to better diffuse ambient light throughout all its cells, thereby optimizing photosynthesis.

It is from this rainbow algae that a cellular concentrate with brightening properties is extracted using environmentally friendly methods. The algae from which it is derived are 100% French in origin—specifically from Brittany—and are ECOCERT-certified organic. To preserve the marine ecosystem, harvesting is done manually by cutting only the young parts of the algae with a knife, which promotes regrowth.
