BAKUCHIOL

Bakuchiol is a natural active ingredient that checks (almost) all the boxes. It is best known as thenatural and gentle alternative to retinol, as it is better tolerated by the skin while delivering similar results. Found in many next-generation skincare products , bakuchiol is particularly prized for its anti-aging, anti-blemish, and anti-dark spot properties. What Is Bakuchiol? — Definition

Bakuchiol is a cosmetic active ingredient extracted from the seeds of the Psoralea corylifolia (babchi) plant, which has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine.

Marketed under the name Sytenol® A, among others, bakuchiol is a pale yellow liquid obtained through a controlled manufacturing process using edible seeds.

It is a 100% naturally derived active ingredient that is non-irritating and non-sensitizing, and stable when exposed to light and oxygen, making it ideal for daily use. Its chemical profile differs from that of retinol, to which it is often compared, but its benefits for the skin are surprisingly similar, without the associated drawbacks.

Bakuchiol — How It Works

Bakuchiol helps improve skin condition in several ways, much like retinol. It acts directly on skin cells to stimulate the production of collagen, the protein that gives skin its firmness and elasticity. The result: wrinkles are smoothed, skin texture is refined, and the skin appears more toned.

But that’s not all. Bakuchiol also has antioxidant properties. It neutralizes free radicals responsible for premature skin aging and boosts the skin’s natural defenses. It also protects cellular DNA and limits the oxidation of membrane lipids, which enhances the skin’s radiance and vitality.

Another major benefit: bakuchiol also acts as a natural anti-inflammatory. It reduces redness, soothes skin prone to irritation, and limits the production of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins. It is therefore ideal for sensitive or acne-prone skin, which often has difficulty tolerating traditional retinoids.

Finally, bakuchiol has antibacterial properties. It specifically targets the main bacteria responsible foracne, such as Cutibacterium acnes, while regulating sebaceous gland activity. Thanks to this multifunctional action, it gently purifies the skin without disrupting its microbiome.

Is bakuchiol suitable for all skin types?

Bakuchiol is one of the few active ingredients suitable for all skin types, without exception: oily, combination, dry, sensitive, reactive... It is extremely well tolerated, even by skin prone toeczema, rosacea, orinflammatory acne.

Another important point: it can be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women, which is not the case with retinol.

It is also suitable for the sensitivity and needs of all skin tones, from the lightest to the darkest, without any risk of depigmentation or irritation. It is therefore a universal active ingredient—both gentle and highly effective—that can be used at any age to address various skin concerns: acne and blemishes, skin aging, redness, hyperpigmentation...

Bakuchiol in Cosmetics

Since bakuchiol is incredibly effective, skincare brands (especially those that promote natural products) are quick to use it in a wide range of products: lotions, serums, creams, eye creams... It is generally used as a plant-based alternative to retinol in anti-aging, anti-blemish, or anti-dark spot skincare products.

Contraindications and side effects: No major contraindications are known to date. Bakuchiol is non-irritating and does not increase the skin’s sensitivity to the sun. It is generally very well tolerated by all skin types, even the most sensitive. For those with extremely reactive skin, a patch test on the inner forearm may still be useful, as with any active ingredient.

Usage and Application Tips: Bakuchiol-basedskincare products can be applied daily, in the morning and/or evening. Bakuchiol does not require an adjustment period and does not preclude sun exposure, but applying sunscreen is always recommended to prevent skin aging.
