What Is Zinc PCA? — Definition

Zinc PCA is formed by combining zinc andL-pyrrolidone carboxylic acid (PCA). It is a “cosmetic” version of zinc, made gentler, more effective, and more moisturizing thanks to the PCA.

Zinc, an essential mineral for the body, has long been recognized for its purifying, antibacterial, and sebum-regulating properties. PCA, on the other hand, is a molecule naturally present in our skin and is used as a moisturizing agent in cosmetics.

When the two are combined, they form zinc PCA. This form makes zinc more tolerable for the skin (less irritating than pure zinc) while promoting hydration.

Zinc PCA — How It Works

Zinc PCA works on two complementary fronts.

On the one hand, zinc helps regulate sebum production by reducing the activity of the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which is responsible for the hormonal conversion that stimulates the sebaceous glands.

On the other hand, PCA acts as a physiological carrier: it facilitates the penetration of zinc into the skin and improves its bioavailability. It also acts as a cellular messenger, stimulating the differentiation of keratinocytes (the cells in the skin’s outermost layer) and strengthening the skin’s barrier function.

This unique combination allows zinc PCA to purify the epidermis without drying it out. It mattifies the skin while leaving it feeling comfortable, without any tightness.

As an added benefit, zinc PCA has antibacterial properties: it limits the proliferation of certain bacteria involved in acne, such as Cutibacterium acnes.

Benefits of Zinc PCA for the Skin

Zinc PCA offers particularly beneficial properties for combination, oily, and blemish-prone skin:

Sebum-regulating: It helps reduce excess sebum, which limits the formation of blemishes.

Mattifying: It reduces shine caused by excess sebum.

Purifying: It limits the growth of bacteria that cause acne and blemishes.

Soothing: its anti-inflammatory action helps calm redness and irritation, particularly in cases of acne.

✔ Balancing: thanks to PCA, it helps the skin retain moisture, preventing the dryness often associated with purifying skincare products.

Non-comedogenic: ideal for oily or acne-prone skin.
